The line between "I can handle this" and "I should call someone" is fuzzier than YouTube tutorials make it look, especially in older Norfolk homes where what looks like a simple patch turns into something else entirely once the wall is opened.

## DIY-friendly drywall jobs

A single doorknob hole or nail-pop. Cut a clean square around the damaged area, install a backing piece (some scrap furring strip works), screw a drywall patch to the backing, tape and mud the seams, sand smooth, and prime before painting. This is a one-evening project for a careful homeowner with basic tools.

A small wall anchor hole. The kind left by a picture hanger or curtain bracket. Spackle, sand, prime, paint. A 30-minute job that does not require any drywall skill.

Replacing a single piece of texture-free, painted drywall under 12 inches square in a guest bedroom. Lower stakes if it does not turn out perfectly; you can practice without consequences.

## Jobs to hand off

Water damage. The visible patch is rarely the actual problem. Buy a real sanding block. The little drywall sponges work fine for a small patch but kill your hand on anything larger. A pole sander makes ceiling work tolerable.

Feather wider than you think. Joint compound should taper out at least six inches past the actual patch. The transition is what makes the repair invisible.
